IRMA GUTIERREZ: LINES BEYOND BOUNDARIES

(b. 1975, Mexico) Contemporary artist and designer with more than 200 exhibitions and 28 years of trajectory who lives and works in Ottawa, Canada.

As self-taught artist, her artwork has been shown across Mexico, Egypt, Germany, France, England, Poland, Russia, Spain, Bulgaria, Italy, Austria, Portugal, Republic of Macedonia, Argentina, USA, China, Canada, among others. Selected in more than 20 International biennials, Her work is represented in private and public collections, including Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Egypt), Novosibirk’s State Museum (Russia), and the Museum of Arts of Queretaro (Mexico). She collaborate as character co-creator in the stop motion movie "Inzomnia" from director Karla Castañeda.

In 1997 met artist Jose Luis Cuevas who became her tutor and mentor. She lived in Barcelona and attended the Advance School of Art and Design (LLOJTA), and several printmaking workshops in 2000. That same year she became a member of the Printmaking Workshop "La Torre de los Grillos" along with Sergio Garval, Humberto Baca, Juan Carlos Macias, Cornelio Garcia among others in Guadalajara.

Director of Institute of Art and Culture of Tepic City, Mexico (2002-2005, 2011-2012) creating & developing cultural events, as “Festival de las Animas” that still running nowadays, the first “Desfile de Catrinas", “Espacios Culturales” the first cultural spots in radio, “Festival de los Alebrijes”, “Orígenes de Tepic", “Jose Luis Cuevas Exhibition”, among others. In 2021 the Center of Contemporary Art Emilia Ortiz CAC in Tepic paid her homage naming an Exhibition Hall Number one after her. She is an Art Instructor at the Ottawa School of Art. Irma works primary printmaking - burin, drawing and acrylic on canvas.

As Logotype Designer, she created the official Logotype of 80th Anniversary of Mexico - Canada of Diplomatic Relations in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico and Consulate of Mexico in Ottawa. Her youtube channel @irmadibujandolahistoria is an educational Art and Historic channel about remarkable artists meanwhile drawing their portrait.

Her work explores labyrinths of the human mind trying to confront the character with its reflection; are we really those we look at?

The coexisting whispers and echoes of those who become almost a forgotten remembrance are reflected into those mirrors based on memories of lost stories and secrets, finally face up to a duality that is constituted into the complexity/easiness of our being.

Images of absences, steamed up in front of silence and mystery of what lives inside of us. In which moment do our thoughts take form, and when do we get lost in them?
